Color was something I did not initially expect to find on a fallen, dead tree. As I began to photograph the tree I was struck at how rich and vibrant the colors were. I liked the way the colors in the sap and the beetle brought out the underlying tones in the shaded tree, or the colors in the bark. The blue beetle highlighted the purple and orange tones in the bark, and the sap ran down the tree from red, to orange, and golden yellow. I tried to explore this in my photos. The beauty as well as the unexpectedness in the colors drew me to this element of photography.
